Reeds and Reed Making

Reeds are the key to success in mastering the oboe.

Students who play on good quality handmade reeds have:

  • a deeper, well rounded tone

  • better endurance

  • play better in tune

  • reeds that feel more comfortable and last longer

In addition, students who learn the skill of reed making:

  • save money

  • never have to wait on mail order reeds to arrive

  • have complete control over the construction of their reeds

  • possess a skill that can be used to make extra money in college

Students in my studio are able to purchase customized handmade reeds, reed making kits and equipment, and can begin learning the art of reed making as early as the 7th grade.
